Update : Duilio class 1879

Caio Duilio was the lead ship of a class of ironclad turret ships, built for the Italian Regia Marina in the 1870s, named after Roman Admiral Gaius Duilius. Duilio was started in January 1873, launched in May 1876, and completed in January 1880. She led a class also comprising Dandolo, both replacing the sail and old Principe Amedeo-class ironclads (1865). The Duilio class was designed by famous naval engineer Benedetto Brin, and became the first Italian steam-only turret ironclads, but also, crucially, with four gigantic 450 mm (17.7 in) rifled muzzle-loading guns, the largest, fastest and most powerful ships of their day. They were the dreadnoughts of 1882. Strategically, they fitted into Italy’s large naval expansion program pitted against Austria, compounded by new possibilities offered by the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869.
