New fleet ! The Letton Navy

The Latvian Naval Forces were founded on 10 August 1919 with the country taking its independence from the Russian Empire on 18 November 1918 (only recoignised in 1921). Its first ship was the former German minesweeper SMS M68, previously sunk and salvaged, and remaining its only warship until 1926. The Navy then was rapudly expanded, with two Viesturs-class minesweepers (Viesturs and Imanta) and two Ronis-class submarines (Ronis and Spīdola) all ordered from France as well as the ex-Passat, the submarine tender Varonis. All these were captured in August 1940 after the invasion and fought in WW2, two scuttled, all lost to mines. Since Lettonia was under Soviet supervision until 1991n it’s really from there that the navy, now a pillar of BALTOPS, started to slowly regrow. Today, it is 30 ships, focusing on anti mine warfare inside the NATO frame.
