New Fleet ! – The Icelandic Navy


The Icelandic Navy from 1918 to Today. The coast guard is today the only standing force protecting Icelandic extensive EEZ. It possess today only four large OPVs but once had a dozen vessels, starting with ICGV Þór from 1926, a converted armed trawler and research vessel that helped establishing and protecting its EEZ. It was continuously expanded in the 1950-80s.
The Icelandic Coast Guard is an official agency of the Icelandic government tasked today of surveillance and law enforcement of 12 nautical mile territorial waters and 200 nautical miles fopr the EEZ, continously expanded and causing the Cod Wars with British trawlers.

The Coast Guard is responsible for the search and rescue of ships and aircraft in a much larger sea area that stretches all the way to Greenland, north of Jan Mayen and east of the Faroe Islands. The Coast Guard therefore maintains a seafarer and aircraft rescue center known in English as the Joint Rescue Coordination Center (JRCC Iceland). Within the area of ​​responsibility of the Coast Guard is also bomb disposal, but bombs and explosive materials are often found around the Keflavík station. It also happens that torpedoes wash ashore or get stuck in the fishing gear of fishing vessels. The Finnish Coast Guard is also responsible for marine surveys off Iceland and issuing nautical charts in accordance with international standards and requirements. Since the beginning of 2011, airspace control and the operation of radar stations have been in the hands of the Coast Guard, as well as the supervision of security areas at Keflavík Airport. About 250 work at the Coast Guard.
