The Bangladesh Navy was created in 1971, fully participating in the war of independence, using a few vessels and guerilla tactics. It grew gradually with diverse acquisitions in the 1970s, then 1980s, only three old frigates, and some FACs, many large patrol crafts, and with China and Korea as its largest recent provider. Today it’s a sizeable regional naval power, with two submarines, seven frigates, eight missile corvettes, and a large array of patrol vessel, offshore, coastal and riverine, plus a small naval air force and is a sizeable coast guard force (landing crafts but no Marines troops) to protect 118,813 square kilometres (45,874 sq mi) of maritime territorial area, harbours, bases and EEZ in general, offshore oil resources like the local fishery industry.

To Chittagong (HQ), Dhaka, Khulna, Juldia and Kaptai were added recently BNS Sher-e-Bangla, at Rabanabad, Patuakhali naval base and BNS Sheikh Hasina opened in 2023.
